# design.md

> Your email design brief in one Markdown document that Sequenzy AI, you and your agents all edit

design.md is your brand's email design brief: one Markdown document with the exact values your emails use, how they should sound and how they should look. Sequenzy AI follows it every time it writes or designs an email, and you can edit it in the dashboard, through the API, from the CLI, or let an agent edit it through MCP.

It replaces hunting through several settings pages. Your theme colors, fonts, voice and design direction still live in the same places, and design.md shows and edits all of them at once.

## Where to find it

Open **Settings → Email Design**. Colors, font and shapes are regular inputs, design direction is a text field, and a live preview shows the result. Two buttons at the top connect the page to design.md:

* **design.md** shows the saved document, ready to copy or download.
* **Edit with AI agent** opens Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor with a prompt that reads and saves design.md through the Sequenzy MCP. Describe the change first, or let the agent ask you. If your agent is not connected yet, **Connect Sequenzy MCP** walks you through it.

# Acme email design

## Voice

Plain and direct. Setup steps first.

## Design direction

Editorial and calm. One idea per email, plenty of white space.

## Signature details

A small mono label above the main headline. Accent color only on the main action.

## Reference email

None. This section is read-only.
```
* **Frontmatter** (between the `---` lines): exact values. Colors must be quoted hex values, because `#` starts a comment in YAML. The [API reference](/api-reference/design-md/get) lists every key and value.
* **Voice**: how emails are written.
* **Design direction**: how emails are designed, in your own words. Add any other `##` sections you like, such as Signature details or Imagery; they are read as part of the design direction.
* **Reference email**: the email you saved as your AI style, if any. Change it from the email editor.
## How saving works
design.md always shows the values your emails get today, including the ones Sequenzy picks for you from your brand. Only what you change is saved:
* Leave a value as it is and nothing is saved for it, so it keeps working as it does now.
* Change a value and it is pinned. For example, changing `buttons.radius` keeps that radius even when `layout.buttonShape` would otherwise round your buttons.
* Delete a key or a section and that setting stays as it was. Empty a section to clear it. An empty design direction returns to the direction derived from your brand.
* If someone else saves design.md while you are editing it in the dashboard, your save is rejected with a conflict instead of silently overwriting theirs. Agents and the CLI get the same protection when they send the version they read.
<Note>
  If you saved an email as your AI style, designed AI emails copy that email's
  look. Colors, fonts and buttons you change in design.md reach those emails
  after you clear the AI style. Your voice and design direction apply right
  away.
</Note>
## Edit it with agents and the CLI
Agents can read the same document through the `get_design_md` MCP tool or the `sequenzy://design-md` resource, and save it with `update_design_md`. Pass `dryRun: true` to preview the changes first.
From a terminal, keep design.md next to your code:
```bash theme={null}
sequenzy design-md get > design.md
# edit design.md
sequenzy design-md update design.md --dry-run
sequenzy design-md update design.md
```
The [Get design.md](/api-reference/design-md/get) and [Update design.md](/api-reference/design-md/update) endpoints do the same over HTTP.
